The Playstation 3 has enjoyed some amazing advancements in the short time since it launched last November. Now, with the downscaled E3 looming on the horizon, we are about to begin a flurry of activity in the video game world. The top three gaming companies will compete for our attention and dollars by unveiling new products and promises for the future. Read on to see how far we’ve come and get an example of where we’re going.

With updates in firmware, we’ve seen improved functionality. Downloaded PS1 games from the Playstation Store can now be played on either the PS3 or the PSP. Remote Play will now allow you to stream media from your PS3 to your Playstation Portable anywhere a wireless internet connection can be found. PSone and PStwo games can now be upscaled for HD displays. Blu-Ray discs will now properly scale to any TV. Hell, the PS3 is now even upscaling regular DVDs.

We’ve also gotten some great games in the last few months. Motorstorm has turned out fantastic with the improvements developers added to multiplayer and the new Time Trial modes. Virtua-Fighter 5 is absolutely stunning and engrossing. Recently The Darkness, Spiderman 3, Calling All Cars, and Stardust HD are all very fun games.

However, the promise of the future is what Sony is selling with the PS3 at the moment. The retooled E3 video game expo is coming up in a week and we’re likely to see some majorly impressive Playstation 3 announcements. Word is that Killzone 2 will finally be making an appearance. Little Big Planet, HOME and other expansions of the PS3 universe should also be on display. New firmware is on the way which will allow in game access to the Xross Media Bar. In fact, I have an example of that as a quick preview for you.
