During a keynote address at 2007 Game Developer’s Conference, Phil Harrison revealed details of Sony’s latest bid to create a unified digital world in which internet connected gamers can socialize, play, and share common experiences. The logo shown here will be added to the Playstation 3’s Cross Media Bar this Fall. It will be the gateway to such a virtual world offering custimizable realistic avatars, private and public environments, media streaming, mini-games, online commerce, game achievements and trophies. There are many questions circulating about Sony’s future plans. As some of you may know, Phil Harrison decided to allow a reporter from Time Magazine to interview him at this year’s D.I.C.E. convention in Las Vegas. According to Beyond3D.com, there is a hardware scaler built into the Playstation 3. They have uncover details on its new functionality revealed by the latest SDK update for PS3 developers, which will let the console upscale to 1080i/p, a capability invisible to the developer until now. The linked article is an excellent explanation of the technical limitations devs have faced and how this new functionality should make supporting more resolutions viable.
First the backward compatibility gets fixed, now there’s a scaler? Could things finally be looking up for the PS3?
Launch titles for any new console often suffer from a basic lack of knowledge and development tools in the hands of game designers. Fortunately, middleware companies like Havok provide software that helps bridge these gaps and allows for better games in less time. So it’s incredibly exciting to know that the release of Havok 4.5 brings a significant improvement to the table: SPU optimization.

Playstation 3 is about much more than just the latest high-def games. Sony promised that it would be an entertainment hub which could provide access to content in a number of mediums. One of those, is the Playstation Portable. Thanks to interconnectivity between the PSP and the PS3 we can now wirelessly stream music and video as well as downloading classic PSone games for portable play.
